An Immigrants Definition of "Design Your Life"

I am an immigrant celebrating the 4th of July in a country that has both an idealistic yet strangely peculiar relationship with the word “freedom”. My family and I immigrated to America from the Soviet Union as refugees of anti-semitism when I was 8. (Is this too heavy for a design blog?) We entered into a world of opportunity and possibility for some, yet full of invisible doors and glass ceilings for others. This juxtaposition between the promise of opportunity and it’s invisible barriers change in situation from person to person, but we must all persevere together to be aware of these injustices and create the country we want.

When I use the phrase “design your life” on this blog, I don’t mean just with things. I mean with intention and purpose and integrity.

It is up to us to design the future we want. Now more than ever, it is important to protect the principles of liberty and justice not only for ourselves but for all of the people who need our voice and support. In a time of unprecedented divisiveness, we need to redesign the system so we can design a better future not just for some, but with liberty and justice for all.
